2006 Bill Maher, Barney Frank on Gay Republicans and Larry Craig

Bill Maher makes mention of Larry Craig being outed, this must have followed the article by Michael Rogers back in October 2006

Sock Addict Charged With Theft

The man in his 30s who was arrested in Örebro on Tuesday on suspicion of stealing socks from women was charged on Saturday with three counts of theft.

According to the newspaper Nerikes Allehanda, the man - masked with a stocking over his head - managed to remove the socks directly from the women's feet. One of the women was also relieved of her shoes and support braces.

Another disabled woman stated that the man seemed to "pant and shake with sexual excitement" as he tackled her footwear.

"But I just wanted to feel her artificial leg," said the man in questioning. "It was nothing sexual." source

The Sickness Of Suppression

.
And ain't it so, the Christian right could give the Muslims lessons in suppression. If they got rid of some God and realised this ain't a rehearsal and looked for reward and gratification in this world and not the next, then they might enjoy life a bit more, sans plank up their collective arses.

Satan's in the stall beside me. by Nina Burleigh

The demise of mountain state Republican Senator Larry Craig amuses those of us who enjoy watching right-wing heroes crash to the ground, spiked on their own hypocrisy. It further confirms my theory: prick any conservative and the kink oozes out. The rockier the rib, the more likely you'll find pink lingerie under the trousers or a bullwhip and manacles in the bedside drawer.

You can bet those Beltway dominatrices, madams and escorts (gay and straight) have been able to buy second homes -- maybe even in Sun Valley! -- with their haul during W's reign.

Larry Craig, A few Albertos and a Pissed Bog Squad Cop: Audio Tape

It's human nature to lie when you're trying to save your ass but there comes a time when you have to hold your hand up.

Now I don't know if the good Godly people of the gem state are pissed because Craig is gay and has a penchant for seedy sex or they are pissed, as I would be, that Craig is asking them to believe stuff that even a congenital idiot of the Bush blood line would have a problem with.
This is certainly the case with the bog squad cop as Craig tries to convince him that he, the cop, has imagined how the whole thing went down.
Or perhaps what really pissed the cop was Craig throwing a few "Albertos" at him when Craig "couldn't recall."

Time to pull the stumps up Senator, leg before, played on and caught behind normally means you're out.

Integrity In The Press. There's Still Some Left

.
Editor tells Feebies "On yer bike."

CNN reported on Tuesday that when the FBI asked Seattle newspapers and televisions stations to run photographs of two dark-haired men, taken by the captain of a Seattle ferry who considered their behavior suspicious, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer refused.
The refusal, which was defended by Managing Editor David McCumber in his blog at the paper, was quickly painted as a major transgression by Fox News, Michelle Malkin, and right-wing blogs.

McCumber joined CNN's John Roberts to explain his decision.
"We felt that suspicion is not evidence and that homeland security isn't just a blanket reason to deviate from our usual standards," McCumber stated. Raw Story

Sharia Law Thriving In The USAF?

.

I would grant the waters are far from clear in this case and far be it for me to make a judgement, but it seems some kind of a strange system that an alleged rape victim ends up being court-martialled for "indecent acts" and those that stood accused of the rape are given immunity against prosecution and will testify against the girl.

It will be interesting to see what "evidence" is produced at the court-martial. Make of it what you will. (Raw) Story and video

China Introduces Internet Porn and Politics Busters

This kind of situation would be nirvana to the Christo Fundies.

It's almost like C.H.I.P.S. meets George Orwell's 1984 meets Murakami. The Chinese government has decided to use a pair of cartoon cops to patrol computer screens of Internet users to make sure they are abiding by strict censorship rules, and the duo will encourage others to help them by ratting out potential violators.

Brothers of Slain Turkish Woman to Be Retried

And on it goes, there is a link in the article to the original story

Two brothers of a Turkish woman murdered in Germany in an honor killing have been ordered to be retried on charges of accessory to murder in the 2005 incident. There are suspicions that her youngest brother, who was convicted of the crime, did not act alone.

A German court has ordered the reopening of the trial of two Turkish immigrants who were acquitted of charges related to the honor killing of their sister, who apparently led a lifestyle that was too Western for her conservative siblings.

Germany's Federal Court of Justice in Leipzig on Tuesday ordered the 26- and 28-year-old brothers of Hatun Sürücü to be retried. Sürücü's youngest brother, who was 18 at the time, was convicted of shooting and killing the 23-year-old single mother. Spiegel

He would Have Made A Great Lawman, He Was A Natural

The great story faerie is smiling on me today, another little gem has fluttered in.

Daniel Sawyer really wanted to be a lawman.

Sawyer, charged with impersonating a police officer among other crimes, was arrested Wednesday morning in Cherokee County while taking the entrance examination to be a sheriff's deputy.

The Douglasville man was arrested on outstanding warrants for kidnapping, false imprisonment, battery and impersonating a police officer, said Sgt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. more

I had to go to Spiegel to track down a non pixilated image, here have at it. There are a thousand and one quips I could come up with to accompany this story, not one of them with the slightest bit of sophistication, but I don't need to, you must be there with me as you read away.

'Porn Bush' Angers Republicans

The tribute has not gone over well with Bush's supporters. A spokesman for Republicans Abroad International described the portrait as a "cheap stunt" in an interview......

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Republican Party in Bush's home state of Texas didn't find much humor in the portrait either. "This picture is very distasteful," he told the paper, adding angrily, "Why would anyone want to make a picture of our president from pornographic material?" Spiegel

Zimbabwe Is Fucked

Well and truly.

Once considered a shining example of Africa's potential, Zimbabwe is now a country in the throes of its worst economic crisis in decades.

Critical shortages of food, fuel, foreign currency, and, in some areas, water beset a nation where the official inflation rate tops 7,600 percent. Some analysts believe the real figure is much higher and climbing fast.

"We can't get anything now – no bread, no petrol ... nothing," says Shephard Lunga, a truck driver from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second largest city. "If you don't have somebody who's outside the country supplying you with things, you're finished." more

Justice Texas Style

.

A 30-year old man, Kenneth Foster, is set to be executed today for a murder which he not only did not commit, but which the authorities in Texas accept was carried out by another man in 1996.

The trial judge, the prosecutor, and the jury that sentenced Mr Foster to die admit that he did not murder the victim Michael LaHood. But, under a controversial "law of parties", in Texas an associate of a perpetrator can be found co-responsible in a capital case. The law imposes the death penalty on anybody involved in a crime where a murder occurred. The Independent

Skivies and Bra Strap Update: Atlanta

I'm awfully glad I'm not an Atlanta taxpayer.

Atlanta officials did not decide Tuesday whether they should become fashion police.

However, they did agree to continue to debate whether the city should regulate whether folks can walk around Atlanta with saggy pants and exposed undies. Council members expect to create a 10- to 12-member task force soon to further the debate and decide whether Atlanta should — or can — pass a law to control fashion. more

The Boy Buggery Club's Betrayal Of Amnesty International

If your admiration for the Catholic Church, it's pious hypocrisy and it's adherence to dogma that results in the suffering and deaths of millions is equal to mine, then this is a must read for you.

Courageously Defying The Holy Roman Empire, Amnesty International Stands Tall by Rita Corriel

For this church to speak against Amnesty International, to the point of attempting to undermine it’s very existence, is blatantly hypocritical and disgraceful. AI is being discredited and even demonized, because it chooses to hold to its own sense of integrity and conscience......

Rev. William Skylstad, head of the U.S. Conference of Bishops claims that “The decision undermines Amnesty’s long standing moral authority”. I can think of no institution with less moral authority when it comes to the protection of children than the Catholic Church......

Why do these men express more caring and concern for embryos that are part of a woman’s womb, than for children who are real, whole human beings; indivduals whom they personally know or know about? Why are children whose psyches and bodies have been abused, violated and permanently damaged, not treated with basic human concern or respect? Where are their ‘human rights’? more

Louisiana Lynching and The Jena Six

For those that have been following this shameful carry on there is little new, but for others who have not here is general background to the sordid tale.

My previous posts on this subject are here and include a more in depth article of the scandalous goings on in this shabby redneck town. A direct link below then to the best reporting on the case that I have come across.

Modern-Day Court Lynching; Jena Louisiana

Louisiana Lynching and The Jena Six by Pierre Tristam

It’s the sort of story that should be front-page news and fodder for a national discussion: Six black adolescents railroaded by an all-white justice system in a small Louisiana town where terrorizing blacks is still in a day’s entertainment. Instead, between the follies in Iraq, the crack-pottery in the White House and the latest starlet sightings in rehab or in prison or in the buff, the story has barely made the major news organizations’ agenda.

There’s been some good reporting in the Washington Post and its affiliates, a few rare mentions on ABC and NBC news programs, and longer reports on NPR and Britain’s BBC. That’s about it.

Larry Craig. A less Gleeful Observation

.

Talk about sex selling newspapers, it's like stepping into the tabloid gutter doing the blog rounds this morning, one television station even going so far as to give an on air re-enaction as to what goes on when men cruise for bathroom sex. How low class can it get, the TV station that is, not the cruising?

I suppose Craig deserves a fair bit of stick given his voting record n'all but watching the vultures circling impatiently waiting to pick the carcass clean ain't a pretty sight.

At least, not as far as I know, the Devil, Jesus and therapy aren't involved which for myself and my fellow cynics has to be some kind of a relief.

In The Men's Room by Bill C Davis

Senator Craig most likely thought he was invisible - or he didn’t fully exist when he was in the men’s room.

What was he thinking? What did he need? Could he have found someone with whom to share that part of himself in a not any less hypocritical but at least in a more discreet and less dangerous way?
more

Update: Glenn Greenwald offers an excellent analysis on all the hypocrisy, not so much Craig's but that of the right wing punditry.

A then and now observation, then being just prior to the 06 elections and now being Larry Craig will you please fuck off and never darken the GOP doorway again.

Larry Craig's bathroom behavior and the right wing -- then and now

The reaction to the Larry Craig story provides one of the most vivid illustrations yet of how the right-wing movement works. Last October, just weeks before the midterm election, gay activist Mike Rogers reported that the married, GOP "family values" Senator repeatedly had sex with anonymous men in public bathrooms. His report was based on "extensive research," including interviews with several men whom Craig solicited for bathroom sex. more

It's A Funny Old World. Drowned Witch Doctor Edition

So much for faith.

DAR ES SALAAM (AFP) - A traditional medicine man in Tanzania drowned after jumping in a river and promising to resurface three days later with relevations from ancestral spirits, police said Tuesday.

The local witch doctor, named as Nyasio Alfonso, staged his ill-fated stunt last week at the village of Masingo in the western Mpanda district near Lake Tanganyika, Rukwa regional police commander Daudi Siadi told AFP.

Dozens of villagers chanted and drummed as the fortune-teller dived to confer with the riverine spirits, he said. more

Going To Be Trouble At 'Mill? : Turkey

Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, a former Islamist, has been elected president in a parliamentary vote.

Mr Gul was elected in a third round of voting, after months of tension between Turkey's ruling Islamist-rooted AK Party and the secular establishment.

The vote came a day after a new warning from the military about attempts to undermine the secular constitution.

Mr Gul, whose wife wears a Muslim headscarf, has pledged to respect Turkey's secular institutions.

The AKP, which won recent snap polls, needed only a simple majority in the third round of voting.

Turkey's military chief warned on Monday that "centres of evil" were trying to undermine the state. BBC

Sikh outrage at US airport security

New US airport security measures have angered a Sikh civil rights group which says they will allow arbitrary searches of turbans, their religious headdress.

The groups said that under the new guidelines turbans could be subject to manual "pat-downs" even if their wearers had passed a metal detector test.

Amardeep Singh, executive director of the coalition, said that the policy allowed people to be singled out "on the basis of their religion". more

It really is a shocker, what I excerpt below is nothing compared to what unfolds, that below just lays out the conditions under which some of the greatest scams in the history of the world were allowed free rein to bloom like a desert flower after a downpour.

O'Beirne proved to be a classic Bush villain, a moron's moron who judged applicants not on their Arabic skills or their relevant expertise but on their Republican bona fides; he sent a twenty-four-year-old who had never worked in finance to manage the reopening of the Iraqi stock exchange, and appointed a recent graduate of an evangelical university for home-schooled kids who had no accounting experience to manage Iraq's $13 billion budget. James K. Haveman, who had served as Michigan's community-health director under a GOP governor, was put in charge of rehabilitating Iraq's health-care system and decided that what this war-ravaged, malnourished, sanitation-deficient country most urgently needed was . . . an anti-smoking campaign.......

In short, some $8.8 billion of the $12 billion proved impossible to find. "Who in their right mind would send 360 tons of cash into a war zone?" asked Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight Committee. "But that's exactly what our government did." Rolling Stone

Update:
The Rolling Stone article makes mention of this:

BAGHDAD — Iraq's deadly insurgent groups have financed their war against U.S. troops in part with hundreds of thousands of dollars in U.S. rebuilding funds that they've extorted from Iraqi contractors in Anbar province.

The payments, in return for the insurgents' allowing supplies to move and construction work to begin, have taken place since the earliest projects in 2003, Iraqi contractors, politicians and interpreters involved with reconstruction efforts said. story
