This is the transcript of an interview with Gonçalo Amaral, Paulo Reis and Duarte Levy, by Júlia Pinheiro, on 'As Tardes da Júlia', TVI, broadcast live on or around the 28th of July 2008.
JP: Do you really reach the theory of an accidental death according to your theory, before the dogs arrive in Portugal, or…
GA: Yes, before the dogs come to Portugal, there are signs of death as I say in the book, signs which are given by the family that a cadaver is being searched. This gentleman comes from South Africa, and hair from the little girl, supposedly from the little girl, he places it inside a machine which he invented and we hear its contents which says that there within a certain area of the beach lies a cadaver. So he came on the couple’s request, otherwise he would not be requested. Then, the dogs’ intervention follows a work of analysis, of planning carried out by a British national consultant, from the British police, he was here in Portugal, he saw the area, he consulted the process with what happened, therefore with facts that existed, he went to the area, he rode a helicopter, consulted with academics, and all that and he reached the conclusion that we have to search for a cadaver. In order to search for a cadaver these experts have to be used, these dogs and that was what happened. So from there on…
JP: So that was what is called a good relationship between British and Portuguese investigators.
GA: Very good.
JP: Very good. Contrary to everything that was later reported by the press.
GA: Exactly.
JP: So your opinion is that an accidental death took place in that apartment.
GA: It is not my opinion. It’s the opinion of the investigation. This has to be made very clear. I have repeated this several times but it’s important.
JP: You are absolutely right, so according to the investigation…
GA: According to the investigation that was composed of English, Portuguese investigators…
JP: Exactly. The little girl died in that apartment?
GA: The little girl died in that apartment.
JP: On the evening of the 3rd of May.
GA: And we reached that conclusion with the data that we have.
JP: And before the time that was announced? Before 10 pm which is the time that was…
GA: The time is not known because the reconstitution was not carried out, which could be important in order to define the times and to verify if they could have attended all that vigilance from the parents, every 10 or every 5 minutes, so if they were having dinner and all of a sudden almost nobody dined, isn’t it. But it seems that only one plate went back, a steak that had to be warmed up. It was necessary to understand who it was that failed to eat that steak and what everyone else ate, how long the dinner lasted, how long the meals take to be confectioned, and all of those things in order to understand it all afterwards.
The reconstitution was not carried out and from there on it’s difficult to know at what time it could have happened. There is one piece of data in terms of accurate time that evening, it exists and it concerns the little girl, it’s the time at which she left the nursery.
JP: At 5.30 pm.
GA: At 5.30 pm, concerning the other witnesses that were at the beach there is the video registry, they were filmed by the camera that was there, at 6.36 pm they leave the beach, first the men and afterwards the women and children, in terms of times and then there is the time of the Irish witness who knows at what time his dinner ends, and he has the receipt of the payment with the time at which he paid, when he leaves the restaurant across the street –
JP: Across the street he sees a man walking down with a child…
GA: He sees a man walking down with a child.
JP: … who he only realizes to be Gerry McCann when he sees Gerry McCann descending with his children…
GA: Exactly.
JP: … when they return to England.
GA: The files that mention the testimony, they mention the clumsy manner in which he carried the child, the posture which we could call athletic, that he was an athletic individual and they offer a description, they reach the point of saying that, it was maybe possible in terms of saying who it is physically, but with those characteristics, the manner in which he walked, how he carried the child, they could know who it was. And so when he sees, when that family sees Gerry McCann descending from the airplane carrying the child and he starts to walk on the pavement, they realized. Now he says it’s 80%, if you tell me ah that is not evidence, I also agree it’s not evidence but at least it’s a piece of information and that information should always be worked out.
JP: And was it?
GA: When I left Portimão, on the 1st of October, I left on the 2nd but on the 1st we were arranging for those witnesses to come to Portugal. We already had permission from the national director, all that was left to do was to choose a hotel for them to stay and to schedule a date. After I left I know it took several months until the witness was heard, which happened around January or February this year, I don’t know, through a rogatory letter or a request for assistance under international cooperation.
JP: That is really one of the surprising bits of data. Another piece of data which is also surprising is related to that towel that Kate McCann gives for the first dogs, our dogs, the Portuguese. Why did she give a towel and not a piece of clothing? After this I’ll let Paulo speak.
GA: That is another question that has to be understood as well, doesn’t it? The towel because supposedly she had had a bath that day, right? It would therefore carry more of the little girl’s smell, the little girl’s odour, so this was an option between her, I think, and the members of GNR.
JP: The GNR which was there. Let’s hear Paulo.
PR: Now before I move on to another question, concerning the towel has the PJ established for example how often the bed sheets and the towels in the apartments are changed. Because if memory doesn’t fail me, the towel is delivered to the GNR 48 hours after the little girl disappeared.
GA: No. The towel was handed over right on that night.
PR: On that night.
GA: The GNR dogs also arrived that night. But the last time that the apartment had been cleaned was on Wednesday.
PR: A while ago, you mentioned an English policeman, a great expert, I suppose you were referring to Mark Harrison who is one of the two or three best British policemen in terms of investigating complex crimes. He was here, he spent a week in Praia da Luz, he rummaged through Praia da Luz, he walked everywhere, the saw the process upside down, he read the entire process, and then he wrote a report in which he concludes that the most likely hypothesis is the child’s death, and if I’m correct, he proposes the dogs’ coming, right?
GA: Exactly.
PR: Was he the policeman who also retired, a reference that you made during a press conference? That there was an English policeman who retired.
GA: No.
PR: Was there an English policeman who also retired?
GA: The English policeman who retired is from the Leicester police. Now the reasons I would prefer not to talk about him at the moment. As a matter of fact I’d like to talk to him personally and I don’t want him to be pressured so I would reserve myself the right not to comment any further.
PR: Just to make this very clear, is that English policeman, Mark Harrison…
GA: No, no, no.
PR: … who comes here, writes a report, no, I’m not talking about the retirement issue, I’m just saying that he came here, that he is an expert in complex crime, one of the most prestigious from the English police, he walks the streets of Praia da Luz from one end to another, he measures, routes, timings, he analyses the process and after that he writes a report in his quality as one of the finest English experts, where he writes black on white that the most likely possibility is that the child died in the apartment, is that correct?
GA: Correct.
PR: That is what marks the turn in the investigations.
GA: Correct.
PR: And then the famous dogs arrive…
GA: Yes, to detect cadaver and human blood odour.
JP: So you don’t want to tell why your colleague retired. He has his own reasons. But you are aware that all of this thickens the public’s perception of a Machiavellian conspiracy theory. I understand your position, maybe at the moment you don’t want to say more or you can’t, it’s a fact that your book has brought us something more but we still fail to understand everything. Mainly, possibly the macro-structure that surrounds all of this. Duarte?
DL: No, I just wanted to talk about the issue of the English lab’s reports.
JP: That is very important, yes.
GA: The reports from the English labs… the English reports arrive shortly before the questionings that were scheduled. And it contained certain conclusions, if they thought they were inconclusive they shouldn’t have mentioned it, the question of the 15 alleles in a profile of 19 from the little girl, stating that they match Madeleine McCann, but they also say that it could have been a construction let’s say from various donors, from other persons, a contamination could have produced Madeleine McCann’s profile by coincidence. But there are no excuses for saying that it is not from Madeleine McCann because they held the profiles of the father, the mother, the siblings, therefore there are no doubts that at least within that family they only matched Madeleine McCann’s.
DL: In Portugal, for example, we only need a match of 15 alleles out of 19 in order to determine someone’s paternity, therefore… That is the first fact. The second fact is that at this moment, the institute for Forensic Medicine is already prepared, they already own the same equipment as the FSS in England to carry out this type of analysis. Why does the Public Ministry or the Polícia Judiciária not request, or don’t they have any more samples to carry out…
GA: As far as we know, they have all been destroyed by now, namely the hair. Nothing can be done.
PR: Concerning the FSS reports –
GA: And the samples were microscopic, weren’t they…
PR: Are you absolutely certain that the reports that reached you, namely those concerning the blood residues in the car boot, are exactly the reports that left the FSS?
GA: I have no doubts whatsoever, in fact, they were delivered by a senior official from Leicester police, it carries a logo, they came and went by email, so there is an existing origin, therefore the report is signed, so I have no doubts about that.
JP: You have no doubts whatsoever about that.
GA: On the official document.
JP: But wasn’t it published in Belgium that…
DL: … that there are two reports. There is one report that left the FSS and there is a second slightly different report that arrived in Portugal.
GA: There is a recent report and there are two other reports. The first one mentions 15 alleles and here is the main question, it places the focus, they place the focus on that part of the exam from the vehicle, in the second [report] they then focus on the apartment, if on one side 15 alleles were not enough, in the other there were only 5 alleles that matched Madeleine McCann’s genetic profile, what could be read there was that there were almost no problems. Because it’s easily justifiable. It may not be justifiable with the cadaver odour on the spot where the blood sample was collected, but therefore, inside the house it is easy to justify, it’s more difficult with a car that was rented more than twenty days later. So this is where the major confusion lies.
JP: Yes, Paulo?
PR: At a given moment in time, around the 9th or 10th of May, starts what you mention in your book, a wave of sightings of Madeleine. Madeleine is first seen in Morocco, by a…
GA: First she is seen here in Portugal. The wave starts to spread in Portugal.
PR: Exactly. Portugal and then –
GA: Then she is seen in the North, then jumps to South America, Brazil…
PR: One that was largely publicised by the English newspapers, was from a Norwegian lady who was spending holidays in Morocco and who swears that she saw the little girl. What the English press does not mention at that time is that the lady is Norwegian but she is married to a man who was born and bred in Rothley, the town where the…
JP: It could be a tremendous coincidence.
PR: … the McCanns resided for the last few years. This is the question that I ask you: The wave of sightings, namely in Morocco, where witnesses state that they are 100% certain that it was the child, I have no doubts. Beyond the usual confirmation with Interpol, Interpol and the police forces in those countries were requested to investigate those sightings and those witnesses.
GA: The witnesses, it was necessary to hear those witnesses and she lives in Southern Spain. She lives near Valencia. That is one of the diligences that possibly remained to carry out. But concerning those sightings in Morocco, it was through the cooperation with the English police, with liaison officers with the Moroccan police that tried to obtain the video tapes from that petrol station where the little girl was seen, in order to try to find out if it could actually be her or not. It was all handled from there.
JP: And you don’t value the fact that really the lady who saw is married to someone who coincidentally is…
GA: That was actually taken into account and it happened later, as Paulo Reis said, and as a matter of fact it’s something that should have been worked upon in terms of being heard.
JP: Well, let’s talk about what worries…
GA: But I can also say that apart from those sightings all over the world, in Praia da Luz there were little girls that strongly resembled Madeleine, blond with blue eyes, many of the same age as her. Therefore, someone could have spotted Madeleine there, in Praia da Luz, something that was not done.
JP: That’s true, that’s true. In your opinion, Maddie, in the opinion of the investigation and of your colleagues and the team that you coordinated, did Maddie die that evening?
GA: She died.
JP: And someone took her from that apartment and placed her where?
GA: Look, when we are in an investigation of this kind we have to understand what the knowledge of those persons is, if they know other people, what contacts they have. If they have means at their disposal. We have to know the area itself, to know about the facility or the almost material impossibility to conceal the corpse within few hours and few minutes. And the conclusion that we reach with all of this, with all of this data is that, if there was any involvement from those nine persons, the corpse could only be in the beach area. And that is in fact where the gentleman…
JP: The investigator.
GA: Not the investigator, the Irish witnesses…
JP: Ah yes!
GA: … see a person passing, a man carrying a child, a little girl, they say that it is in effect Madeleine going towards the South area, let’s put it that way, towards the sea side. Now whether or not she stayed there, that is another question. For how long she stayed there, what happens next, only the development of the investigation of that area of death, let’s put it that way, could take us there.
JP: Would you have followed that investigation line?
GA: It was the direction that I was following at that time so until we emptied it we weren’t stopping, were we…
JP: It sounds so unbelievable, the possibility that a body was placed on a cliff, or in any other area on the beach, and then removed and transported in a rental car.
GA: The corpse couldn’t have remained there all the time. It’s impossible.
JP: So where was it taken next?
GA: If we take into account that, if we consider the traces that were found in the car boot…
JP: … which are in fact…
GA: … which are in fact from the little girl. In order to justify that bodily fluid as the lab says, it could only have been preserved and conserved in the cold because otherwise it would have been…
JP: That means that…
GA: … in an advanced state of decomposition, at least it’s a hypothesis. Therefore it’s a question of a deep freezer, or something similar, and there we had to search for it and that was what we were doing. This means, the contacts that they had, where they went, where they were seen… There are people who say that they were seen entering an apartment block near the cemetery in Praia da Luz. At that point in time we weren’t able to detect which apartment they entered, who lived there, because it’s also a bit complicated because you have to understand it’s a tourist area and often it’s not known who the apartment belongs to.
JP: Of course, of course…
GA: Who lives there, for how long they live there, so all of that was being worked upon. To try to understand the support…
JP: If someone discovered a deep freezer in the area and…
GA: If it was actually a deep freezer, it doesn’t exist anymore now.
JP: Is that still possible to find out? I imagine…
GA: Look, a few years ago on the Azores, after a homicide that had taken place years earlier, we managed to locate a vehicle that was already in a junk yard in which a taxi driver had been killed, a taxi driver from Praia da Vitória in the Azores. But we were unlucky, normally the van’s back had a carpet but it didn’t exist anymore. That carpet didn’t exist anymore, so if we had found that carpet it would have been possible to prove that the death had taken place there, so anything is possible.
JP: Anything is possible. I don’t know if Paulo and Duarte have any further questions, you have to be brief, we’re almost finishing.
DL: One more doubt, I read in your book that you never received the medical report, Madeleine’s clinical history. For example I also know that –
GA: We think, because that’s the way it is, we spoke to the English police, they said right away that there were problems in England to hand that over within the rogatory letter’s context. There is a rogatory letter that was carried out but before that there was another rogatory letter that was being prepared which also contained those questions and which also contained questions about other tests, other tests by the dogs with the friends that were there, namely on the clothes with those same dogs in order to try to find cadaver odour or any other trace, that was important. So there was that rogatory letter…
DL: And you never received those reports, you receive the reply that the McCanns had no credit cards, you already knew that was false, could it then be said that there were two English teams working on this case? The one that in fact stood beside the PJ and the one that worked against…
GA: I don’t speak with the English police, I can assure you…
JP: And now we don’t speak at all because we’re arriving at the end. I only want, Gonçalo Amaral, I only want to know one thing. Will Maddie return to your life one of these days, or not?
GA: I think yes. This book has the will of clarifying and of contributing to the investigation, I think yes, there are more things to talk about.
JP: Is that your mission?
GA: It’s not a mission, it’s a question of recovering my dignity and my honour and that of my colleagues and of this institution to which I was so proud of belonging to for so many years, and of justice being done for the little girl.

Madeleine McCann, What Americans Didn't See On Oprah

This is the first of four articles that I intend lay before you that are taken directly from the official files released by the Portuguese Polícia Judiciária (CID) when the case of missing English three year old Madeleine was shelved with indecent haste with collusion by the new (Maddie case) co-ordinator of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) Paulo Rebelo, Portuguese Justice Minister Alberto Costa, the PJ national director Alípio Ribeiro, but to name few.
If you are new to the case don't concern yourself with the who's who at present other than to recognise the name Goncalo Amaral (see photo) the original PJ co-ordinator of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Goncalo Amaral was removed as the co-ordinator of the investigation after five months, the excuse being his (justifiable) criticism of the UK police who were partially involved in the case, but in reality he smelled a rat from the outset, didn't buy into the abduction theory and was getting too close for comfort to bringing the true perps, the McCanns, to justice.
Subsequently Dr Amaral retired from the PJ in order to speak freely and defend his good name, he has recently written a book on the case "The Truth About The Lie" published in many languages but unfortunately as yet not in English.
Goncalo Amaral is the most vocal and high profile champion seeking justice for Madeleine McCann and it is an interview with Dr Amaral that will also feature in this series of articles.
There are volumes that I could write in this introduction but I will leave it as is for now but perhaps I should mention that the Portuguese legal system is a somewhat strange to say the least and not least is the release of (most but not all) of the case files of the investigation.

Where he concludes, after analyzing all the evidence gathered, that the child is dead and the parents were responsible for cadaver occultation, and the entire GROUP was lying since the first day of the investigation.

MADELEINE BETH MCCANN was born on the 12th of May of 2003.
She is missing (disappeared) since 03 of May of 2007, a fact that occurred in Praia da Luz, Lagos.
She is the daughter of Gerald and Kate McCann and her birth was desired and planned. However it must be referred the difficulty of the mother to get pregnant, from which resulted the necessary treatments and their “costs”. [I presume he refers more to the emotional and social costs than monetary ones].
She was born after fertilization “in vitro”, but in face of the DNA profile of the minor, she is the daughter of the couple McCann.
It is a scientific fact that the medical treatments to overcome some of the causes for a non-pregnancy raises the probability of, in a normal pregnancy, twins may be born.
In this case we can see that a pregnancy, although desired and planned, turned into a family situation of five instead of three persons. And then, to take care of one child is not the same as taking care of three, all very young.
At around 24h on the 3rd of May of 2007, through a phone connection from the Lagos GNR to this “piquet”, was communicated the disappearance of a minor, a british subject.
We went to the local to proceed to the necessary judiciary inspection.
Before the fact of the disappearance of the minor, the investigation “designed” the several possible sketches.
From the beginning the parents of the minor attributed the fact (disappearance) to the action of a third party, defending the KIDNAPPING.
Even though it was a possible scenario, the actions of the family were in the sense of conducting into that direction, through the publicity of the fact in a way that was never seen before.
In fact, in the following day, the british televisions “opened” the news already publicizing the disappearance/kidnapping of the minor.
The defense of this scenario was, for the Media, the truth of the facts under investigation.
Time went by without the confirmation of this scenario by the presence of any of its necessary assumptions. It was never requested any sort of ransom in exchange for information or the child herself.
However and in front of the depositions of one of the friends, Jane Tanner, one could presume to be before such frame.
Meanwhile the diligences continued in order to recover all types of information and always in the perspective of working over all the possible scenarios.
The information recovered, in the beginning, with the family and friends, was uncertain and “worked up”, by the group, in order to give strength to the version presented and defended.
According to the parents and the GROUP, they went for dinner and all of them left the children, sleeping, in their respective apartments.
The elements of the group had a meeting where they agreed on certain rules that sustained the version that they accompanied continuously the children, while they dined.
It is annexed a manuscript of an element of the group that gives consistence to this thesis.
These principles that, in this way, were shared by all the group makes that all the GROUP is always exculpated in the eyes of the British public opinion, making it impossible that any abnormal occurrence that occurred could take more than 30 minutes, once they all agreed to be that the timing they used to look for the children.
The version that someone in the group that every 15 minutes or every 30 minutes went to the apartments to check if everything was alright falls down!
From the declarations of the group results a total incoherence, in the face of which it’s obvious, that everyone lies.
We may verify that one of the elements of the group wanting to provide consistency to the group’s version, gives it a personal touch: the checking on the children were done in two ways, one just by listening if anyone was crying and in case there was silence than everything was well and the other one, by really checking.
On his turn to verify the children, one of the elements of the group, Mathew, acted on this manner, and he even told Kate that everything was okay but without specifying. Kate remembers this detail.
The truth, however, is that this statements made the investigation to wander, losing time and resources.
It is not admissible (understandable) that this information was given in the beginning and maintained all along the time, in spite of the fact that anyone could verify the losses that it caused to the investigation.
After all this time the version is maintained paired with the public and “hammered “statement that what they want the most is “to help the investigation”.
The investigation had to assume the incorrect information and move forward.
From tsuch the results are that:
• If anyone went to check the children and if everything was alright the disappearance could only have occurred between 21:30h and 22:00h;
• If the information didn’t take into account that witness (? ) then the disappearance occurred between 21:00h and 22:00 h, enlarging the period ( assuming the father is telling the truth);
There is however another question about the timing, which is:
• The last time the child was seen outside of the GROUP, by someone that can prove that moment, it was around 17h:35m, when the parents went to fetch her from the Creche, which can enlarge the gap of time, between the disappearance and the alarm, to four hours.
Continuing with the analysis of the information presented, we have an element of the GROUP that became a witness, pretensely important, Jane Tanner, because of what she communicated: she SAW someone at dinner time crossing the road from the place of the disappearance, in the direction of Robert Murat’s house.
This information swerved (directed) and mobilized the work of the investigators for a long time. This can be the example how information that is not correct can, not only delay, but could have also lead to the loss of the little girl.
Through the insistence on the information, several scenarios of the disconformities of that with the reality were traced, but it didn’t prevent the realization of an intense and long work around that arguido.
We can also verify the discrepancies about the subject on the declarations of Gerald and Jane. How to pass at scarce 2 / 3 meters from each other without seeing one another, they can be positioned in such a reduced space, and between them they cannot see the same person passing by; or rather, one sees but not the other.
Even the local where, assumingly, they crossed each other is not well defined by any of them.
The moment chosen by the witness Jane to make her statement about what she had “seen” and the explanation for that moment is unreal, that is, it is not easy to accept that any witness (from the group) when seeing someone with a child in the arms getting away from the McCann’s place, hadn’t immediately acted or spoken, being certain that the description of the person was being consecutively altered, “perfected”. So, there isn’t much credibility on this deposition.
Until now we have been analyzing small distortions in the information initially transmitted, being noticeable “small” alterations (distortions) of the truth, and relating it with the investigation and with the directions it forced it into.
The investigation didn’t follow the command or the will of anyone; the family and Group’s information that on this type of crime is fundamental, was always distorted.
The fact that the individuals were foreigners prevented, until now, that direct information about the persons of the GROUP were obtained.
The parents of the minor live in a society, the British, known through the press, as very demanding. The professions of both parents, medicine, completed by the fact that the father is a surgeon, increases this degree of pressure and consequent tiredness.
In a society identified internationally and in the Media as very demanding and with many and tight rules to establish those standards of exigency, it makes it obligatory that people rest; make a professional retreat; take their holidays.
Gerald McCann’s profession is a cardiovascular surgeon.
On many moments of his professional career he had to make decisions in thousandths of a second, which gives him certain “coldness” and, certainly provokes an increased tiredness.
The enjoyment of a period of holidays supposes a rest through non-ordinary practices and freedom and exemption from schedules.
The social life in such a holiday, in the present case, was facilitated by the fact that they travelled as a group.
But that social life may, in a certain way, be touched by the presence and constant needs of accompanying the minors.
This evidence and need was clear in the deliverance of the children by the respective children’s centers and creches (according to their ages). The holiday time was not shared between parents and children.
The day, 03 of May of 2007, had gone by, until dinner time, in a natural way according to the adopted style.
After getting the children from the Children’s centers and the creche they went to the apartment, little after 17:35h.
But…Kate went running for half an hour at the beach and then went to the apartment and…Gerald went to play tennis.
While the tennis play was taking place another element of the group that had been in touch with Kate, in the apartment, in a period of time that could have taken between 30 seconds, according to Kate, and 30 minutes, according to Gerald.
In thirty seconds we may ask if everything is well and if anything is needed, little more.
In thirty minutes we can go ahead and make something that is needed from us…
They put the minors to bed and to sleep, around 19:30h. They stood at home until 20:30h, going to the Tapas restaurant afterwards. Of the group they were the first to arrive.
Although the entire group was at the table and starting the meal, they began the “visits” to the children in a way that is neither coherent nor acceptable; that could not be confirmed and only the group defends it, in a sort of “unique version”.
Although they say in the “Autos” that their strategic position in the Tapas restaurant allowed them, the McCann, to see the apartment where they’d left their children, minor, sleeping, the exam of the local reveals it is false.
It must be noted, also, that by the stated in the “Autos” everything points to their position at the table with their back to the apartment.
On that NIGHT, around 22:05h, according to her version, it was Kate that went to the apartment to check the children, coinciding with the end of the dinner, at which she had arrived at 20:30h.
So, she returned to the apartment about one and a half hours later, the time lapse while she didn’t see her children.
It took her about 10 minutes. She returned to the restaurant and communicated to the remaining elements the disappearance of her daughter Madeleine.
It must be noted that Kate knew that, going back to the restaurant as she did, she would leave the twins, Amelie and Sean, in the same dangerous situation.
It is not understandable why she didn’t use the cell phone to call Gerald or the group or, even simpler, that she didn’t go to the balcony from where she could be perfectly heard by the elements of the group.

The authorities, the GNR, were alerted around 22:40h and, he population alerted, started the searches for the minor.
The divulgation of the facts weren’t kept within the authorities and the normal channels. On the following day the british and portuguese TVs were advertising the fact.
The GROUP was together. The search was circumscribed to the interior of the apartment.
Before any search by the authorities at the surroundings the notice about an eventual kidnapping was already running along.
By reasons, they said, of counseling and support the parents asked for the presence of a priest, at around 02:00h/03:00h on the 04 of May.
On the informal depositions they made, during the judiciary inspection made at the local, the information immediately induced the thesis of KIDNAPPING.
Simple things became disinformation: the question of the opened or closed window; the shutter up or down; the balcony door opened…the front door, locked or open.
Despite everything, until a certain time in the investigation the family sustained the thesis of kidnapping. However, in a date that cannot be precise it was suggested to the family that they should consult a person that could, eventually, indicate the probable place where the cadaver of little Madeleine could be found.
This fact became inexplicable to the elements of the investigation once it were the members of the family that raised the hypothesis of death of little Maddie.
Nevertheless, before the Media they kept (and keep) declaring their hope on finding their daughter alive: the first time that the hypothesis of the death of the little girl was raised it was, effectively, suggested by the McCann.
Although maintaining all the lines of the investigation opened it was, nevertheless, decided to advance in the direction of a new inspection to the local where the girl disappeared.
The inspection technique is frequently used in the United Kingdom and consists on the use of dogs especially trained.
As it’s natural it is the dog’s olfact the “sense” used. In the case of this “sense” the difference between the human and the dog is 5 million cells to 200 millions.
It must be highlighted that the resource to this kind of inspection is frequent in the UK and the success rate is 100%.
One of the dogs is trained to detect the odor of cadaver and the other to identify vestiges of human blood.
We refer now that the location of the cadaver odors signifies that physically the body (cadaver) is not on the place, marked by the dog, but certainly it has been there, as long as the dog signals it.
As it can be verified from the “Autos”, in the inquiry, the dogs inspected the locals and objects with the results described below.
All the inspections were recorded in sound and image and were directed by our british colleagues that accompanied the dogs.
Among the great number of objects and locals inspected, the dogs marked the following places:

6. Clothes and belongings of McCann family

• The odor was detected when the toy was still in the interior of the actual residence of the McCann
• It was confirmed in out of the house conditions
7. Vehicle used by the McCann family

• Marked the interior of the booth

8. Car used by a family friend that was staying in the same resort, in some of the same days

(In a total of 10 cars the cadaver dog and the blood dog only marked the car of the McCann family, rented at May 27th)
The places and the pieces marked and signaled by the blood dog are being subjected to forensic exams, part of which are already concluded.
Not less relevant is the refinement of the results that point towards Madeleine’s DNA as being present at the apartment 5A behind the sofa, a place marked by the cadaver and the blood dog. In every place marked by the blood dog it was confirmed there was DNA.
The Media enhancement given to the case and their search for information has contributed to an evolution on Madeleine’s parents declarations.
All the information that was made public, contributed for the remixing of the story, adapting it to eventual police questions, and to attempts to justify the indicia and consequent proof that was being collected.
Let’s see: the media forwarded the hypothesis that the children could have been sedated to be kept asleep and allow some rest to the parents.
Distant in time Kate’s father, the grandfather of the minor, Brian Healy, admits to the press that Kate could have administered some medication to the little girl, Calpol, to help the child (children??) to sleep, contrary to what his daughter Kate had stated.
Kate, through the PJ inspector that acted as “liaison” with the family [NOTE: that is Ricardo Paiva], asked why samples weren’t taken from the twins in order to test that hypothesis. She knew well enough at that time, more than 3 months later, that such exam would be inviable.
She went further and said that we – the investigation – should verify that the kidnapper had sedated Madeleine, to accomplish the action and he had also sedated the twins …to consummate the act…however she didn’t say that at the right moment.
And we know that the sedatives have timings to act and timings to be expelled, that varies between six and 200 hours.
The medical knowledge of the McCann is enough to know such, even if their professional activity never passed by performing toxicology exams.
When the media informed that blood had been detected “in the car and in the apartment”, Kate and members of her family come to the public with the simple excuse that it had been someone, with access to the apartment, to place the evidence.
Now they even admit it was a member of the criminal investigation to place the “false” evidence (blood and cadaver odor in the apartment and in the car).
Kate in an attempt to justify the blood went even further, informing that on that occasion, Madeleine had, sometimes, nasal hemorragies.
On the day that a house search was performed, in the residence of the McCann, on the master bedroom, written papers were found as well as a bible, written in English. It was opened on the pages whose copies are annexed here, with the translation.
KIDNAPPING is a situation with which, unfortunately, in the United Kingdom, most of the public opinion is used to, due to the rate of this kind of crime.
Intelligent people should have a minimum of knowledge that the publicity is harming to the investigation of a kidnapping crime and especially to the safety of the kidnapped person.
They should have waited for the decisions from the police authorities, there is strong evidence that the crime scene was altered, some furniture was moved around.
Those changes are indications of simulation.
On the night of the disappearance of the little girl Madeleine the family was contacted by a lady that identified herself with documents that credited her as somebody that worked with minors in the United Kingdom.
She identified herself with documents/certifications used in the UK, into hospitals and centers for the care of minors. She offered her help in whatever was needed.
No doubt this person could have been of valuable help, even about procedures, but she was dismissed.
From everything that was gathered, the facts point in the direction that the death of Madeleine McCann occurred, on the night of May 3rd of 2007, inside the apartment 5A, of the Ocean Club resort, occupied by the couple McCann and by their three children;
There is a coincidence between the marking of cadaver odor and blood, according to the Laboratory Report (partial) annexed to the “Autos”.
Such markings, occurred behind the sofa of the living room (cadaver and blood odor/DNA), which proves that indubitably such piece of furniture was pushed back by someone, after the death of Madeleine MCann occurred. Because of the weak (small) vestiges recovered at such place, it is to admit as a strong hypothesis that the same was subjected to a wash, at the time the death occurred.
In the same way, the soft toy used by the dead child, found at the head of the bed where she usually slept (see photos about the initial forensics) reveals that someone put it there in a moment posterior to the death, once the bed doesn’t have cadaver odor. This is, there occurred an intentional modification in order to simulate a “picture” that doesn’t correspond with the reality;
It must be added that the cadaver odor signaled a strong odor in the bedroom where the McCann slept, which can indicate the moving of the corpse from the actual death scene (living room) to the non visible part of the bedroom;
Furthermore a strong reaction for cadaver odor was made on Kate’s clothes, which can indicate that she was in touch with the cadaver;
There was also a strong reaction of cadaver odor in the car used by the McCann (since May 27th 2007), which in conjugation with the blood dog and the forensics present in the “Autos”, that indicate the presence of Madeleine McCann’s DNA in the booth of the car, are in order not to exclude a strong hypothesis that this car may have been used to transport the cadaver, 24 days after the death;
It can’t also be neglected the indication of the cadaver and blood dog, on the car key, having the laboratory confirmed the existence of Gerald McCann’s DNA. This last signaling was obtained by the dogs after the key was put far away from the car and in a place not visible.
From everything that was exposed from the AUTOS, we conclude that:
A) The minor Madeleine McCann died in the apartment 5A of the Ocean Club resort, on the night of May 3rd of 2007;
B) It was performed a simulation of kidnapping;
C) In order to avoid the death [alarm] of the minor before 22H00, it was created a situation of the children’s surveillance by the McCann while the children slept;
D) Kate McCann and Gerald McCann are involved in the occultation of the cadaver of their child Madeleine McCann;
E) At this moment, there seems that there aren’t strong indicia that the death of the minor didn’t happen due to a tragic accident;
F) From what was obtained until now, everything points out that the McCann, as self-defense, didn’t want to deliver immediately and voluntarily the cadaver, existing a strong possibility that the same was transported from the initial place of deposition. This situation is susceptible to raise questions about the circumstances under which the death of the minor occurred.
So we suggest that the “Autos” be sent to the EX.mo Sr. Procurador Geral da Républica [General Attorney], in order to:
G) New interrogation of the Arguidos Kate and Gerry McCann;
H) Evaluation of the measure of restraint to be applied in this case;
On the course of the house search to the residence of the Mccann, a manuscript was found, a sort of diary, already photocopied, possibly authored by Kate McCann, and admitting that the same may contain elements that may help to reach the material truth of the facts, WE PROPOSE THAT:
I) The photocopies of such document to be presented to the M.Mo Judge regarding its apprehension, if legal, translation and eventual recovery of elements to bring into the “Autos” for future investigation.
CONCLUSION
This is the first of four articles that I intend lay before you that are taken directly from the official files released by the Portuguese Polícia Judiciária (CID) when the case of missing English three year old Madeleine was shelved with indecent haste with collusion by the new (Maddie case) co-ordinator of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) Paulo Rebelo, Portuguese Justice Minister Alberto Costa, the PJ national director Alípio Ribeiro, but to name few.
If you are new to the case don't concern yourself with the who's who at present other than to recognise the name Goncalo Amaral (see photo) the original PJ co-ordinator of the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Goncalo Amaral was removed as the co-ordinator of the investigation after five months, the excuse being his (justifiable) criticism of the UK police who were partially involved in the case, but in reality he smelled a rat from the outset, didn't buy into the abduction theory and was getting too close for comfort to bringing the true perps, the McCanns, to justice.
Subsequently Dr Amaral retired from the PJ in order to speak freely and defend his good name, he has recently written a book on the case "The Truth About The Lie" published in many languages but unfortunately as yet not in English.
Goncalo Amaral is the most vocal and high profile champion seeking justice for Madeleine McCann and it is an interview with Dr Amaral that will also feature in this series of articles.
There are volumes that I could write in this introduction but I will leave it as is for now but perhaps I should mention that the Portuguese legal system is a somewhat strange to say the least and not least is the release of (most but not all) of the case files of the investigation.

MADELEINE BETH MCCANN was born on the 12th of May of 2003.
She is missing (disappeared) since 03 of May of 2007, a fact that occurred in Praia da Luz, Lagos.
She is the daughter of Gerald and Kate McCann and her birth was desired and planned. However it must be referred the difficulty of the mother to get pregnant, from which resulted the necessary treatments and their “costs”. [I presume he refers more to the emotional and social costs than monetary ones].
She was born after fertilization “in vitro”, but in face of the DNA profile of the minor, she is the daughter of the couple McCann.
It is a scientific fact that the medical treatments to overcome some of the causes for a non-pregnancy raises the probability of, in a normal pregnancy, twins may be born.
In this case we can see that a pregnancy, although desired and planned, turned into a family situation of five instead of three persons. And then, to take care of one child is not the same as taking care of three, all very young.
At around 24h on the 3rd of May of 2007, through a phone connection from the Lagos GNR to this “piquet”, was communicated the disappearance of a minor, a british subject.
We went to the local to proceed to the necessary judiciary inspection.
Before the fact of the disappearance of the minor, the investigation “designed” the several possible sketches.
From the beginning the parents of the minor attributed the fact (disappearance) to the action of a third party, defending the KIDNAPPING.
Even though it was a possible scenario, the actions of the family were in the sense of conducting into that direction, through the publicity of the fact in a way that was never seen before.
In fact, in the following day, the british televisions “opened” the news already publicizing the disappearance/kidnapping of the minor.
The defense of this scenario was, for the Media, the truth of the facts under investigation.
Time went by without the confirmation of this scenario by the presence of any of its necessary assumptions. It was never requested any sort of ransom in exchange for information or the child herself.
However and in front of the depositions of one of the friends, Jane Tanner, one could presume to be before such frame.
Meanwhile the diligences continued in order to recover all types of information and always in the perspective of working over all the possible scenarios.
The information recovered, in the beginning, with the family and friends, was uncertain and “worked up”, by the group, in order to give strength to the version presented and defended.
According to the parents and the GROUP, they went for dinner and all of them left the children, sleeping, in their respective apartments.
The elements of the group had a meeting where they agreed on certain rules that sustained the version that they accompanied continuously the children, while they dined.
It is annexed a manuscript of an element of the group that gives consistence to this thesis.
These principles that, in this way, were shared by all the group makes that all the GROUP is always exculpated in the eyes of the British public opinion, making it impossible that any abnormal occurrence that occurred could take more than 30 minutes, once they all agreed to be that the timing they used to look for the children.
The version that someone in the group that every 15 minutes or every 30 minutes went to the apartments to check if everything was alright falls down!
From the declarations of the group results a total incoherence, in the face of which it’s obvious, that everyone lies.
We may verify that one of the elements of the group wanting to provide consistency to the group’s version, gives it a personal touch: the checking on the children were done in two ways, one just by listening if anyone was crying and in case there was silence than everything was well and the other one, by really checking.
On his turn to verify the children, one of the elements of the group, Mathew, acted on this manner, and he even told Kate that everything was okay but without specifying. Kate remembers this detail.
The truth, however, is that this statements made the investigation to wander, losing time and resources.
It is not admissible (understandable) that this information was given in the beginning and maintained all along the time, in spite of the fact that anyone could verify the losses that it caused to the investigation.
After all this time the version is maintained paired with the public and “hammered “statement that what they want the most is “to help the investigation”.
The investigation had to assume the incorrect information and move forward.
From tsuch the results are that:
• If anyone went to check the children and if everything was alright the disappearance could only have occurred between 21:30h and 22:00h;
• If the information didn’t take into account that witness (? ) then the disappearance occurred between 21:00h and 22:00 h, enlarging the period ( assuming the father is telling the truth);
There is however another question about the timing, which is:
• The last time the child was seen outside of the GROUP, by someone that can prove that moment, it was around 17h:35m, when the parents went to fetch her from the Creche, which can enlarge the gap of time, between the disappearance and the alarm, to four hours.
Continuing with the analysis of the information presented, we have an element of the GROUP that became a witness, pretensely important, Jane Tanner, because of what she communicated: she SAW someone at dinner time crossing the road from the place of the disappearance, in the direction of Robert Murat’s house.
This information swerved (directed) and mobilized the work of the investigators for a long time. This can be the example how information that is not correct can, not only delay, but could have also lead to the loss of the little girl.
Through the insistence on the information, several scenarios of the disconformities of that with the reality were traced, but it didn’t prevent the realization of an intense and long work around that arguido.
We can also verify the discrepancies about the subject on the declarations of Gerald and Jane. How to pass at scarce 2 / 3 meters from each other without seeing one another, they can be positioned in such a reduced space, and between them they cannot see the same person passing by; or rather, one sees but not the other.
Even the local where, assumingly, they crossed each other is not well defined by any of them.
The moment chosen by the witness Jane to make her statement about what she had “seen” and the explanation for that moment is unreal, that is, it is not easy to accept that any witness (from the group) when seeing someone with a child in the arms getting away from the McCann’s place, hadn’t immediately acted or spoken, being certain that the description of the person was being consecutively altered, “perfected”. So, there isn’t much credibility on this deposition.
Until now we have been analyzing small distortions in the information initially transmitted, being noticeable “small” alterations (distortions) of the truth, and relating it with the investigation and with the directions it forced it into.
The investigation didn’t follow the command or the will of anyone; the family and Group’s information that on this type of crime is fundamental, was always distorted.
The fact that the individuals were foreigners prevented, until now, that direct information about the persons of the GROUP were obtained.
The parents of the minor live in a society, the British, known through the press, as very demanding. The professions of both parents, medicine, completed by the fact that the father is a surgeon, increases this degree of pressure and consequent tiredness.
In a society identified internationally and in the Media as very demanding and with many and tight rules to establish those standards of exigency, it makes it obligatory that people rest; make a professional retreat; take their holidays.
Gerald McCann’s profession is a cardiovascular surgeon.
On many moments of his professional career he had to make decisions in thousandths of a second, which gives him certain “coldness” and, certainly provokes an increased tiredness.
The enjoyment of a period of holidays supposes a rest through non-ordinary practices and freedom and exemption from schedules.
The social life in such a holiday, in the present case, was facilitated by the fact that they travelled as a group.
But that social life may, in a certain way, be touched by the presence and constant needs of accompanying the minors.
This evidence and need was clear in the deliverance of the children by the respective children’s centers and creches (according to their ages). The holiday time was not shared between parents and children.

The places and the pieces marked and signaled by the blood dog are being subjected to forensic exams, part of which are already concluded.
Not less relevant is the refinement of the results that point towards Madeleine’s DNA as being present at the apartment 5A behind the sofa, a place marked by the cadaver and the blood dog. In every place marked by the blood dog it was confirmed there was DNA.
The Media enhancement given to the case and their search for information has contributed to an evolution on Madeleine’s parents declarations.
All the information that was made public, contributed for the remixing of the story, adapting it to eventual police questions, and to attempts to justify the indicia and consequent proof that was being collected.
Let’s see: the media forwarded the hypothesis that the children could have been sedated to be kept asleep and allow some rest to the parents.
Distant in time Kate’s father, the grandfather of the minor, Brian Healy, admits to the press that Kate could have administered some medication to the little girl, Calpol, to help the child (children??) to sleep, contrary to what his daughter Kate had stated.
Kate, through the PJ inspector that acted as “liaison” with the family [NOTE: that is Ricardo Paiva], asked why samples weren’t taken from the twins in order to test that hypothesis. She knew well enough at that time, more than 3 months later, that such exam would be inviable.
She went further and said that we – the investigation – should verify that the kidnapper had sedated Madeleine, to accomplish the action and he had also sedated the twins …to consummate the act…however she didn’t say that at the right moment.
And we know that the sedatives have timings to act and timings to be expelled, that varies between six and 200 hours.
The medical knowledge of the McCann is enough to know such, even if their professional activity never passed by performing toxicology exams.
When the media informed that blood had been detected “in the car and in the apartment”, Kate and members of her family come to the public with the simple excuse that it had been someone, with access to the apartment, to place the evidence.
Now they even admit it was a member of the criminal investigation to place the “false” evidence (blood and cadaver odor in the apartment and in the car).
Kate in an attempt to justify the blood went even further, informing that on that occasion, Madeleine had, sometimes, nasal hemorragies.
On the day that a house search was performed, in the residence of the McCann, on the master bedroom, written papers were found as well as a bible, written in English. It was opened on the pages whose copies are annexed here, with the translation.
KIDNAPPING is a situation with which, unfortunately, in the United Kingdom, most of the public opinion is used to, due to the rate of this kind of crime.
Intelligent people should have a minimum of knowledge that the publicity is harming to the investigation of a kidnapping crime and especially to the safety of the kidnapped person.
They should have waited for the decisions from the police authorities, there is strong evidence that the crime scene was altered, some furniture was moved around.
Those changes are indications of simulation.
On the night of the disappearance of the little girl Madeleine the family was contacted by a lady that identified herself with documents that credited her as somebody that worked with minors in the United Kingdom.
She identified herself with documents/certifications used in the UK, into hospitals and centers for the care of minors. She offered her help in whatever was needed.
No doubt this person could have been of valuable help, even about procedures, but she was dismissed.
From everything that was gathered, the facts point in the direction that the death of Madeleine McCann occurred, on the night of May 3rd of 2007, inside the apartment 5A, of the Ocean Club resort, occupied by the couple McCann and by their three children;
There is a coincidence between the marking of cadaver odor and blood, according to the Laboratory Report (partial) annexed to the “Autos”.
Such markings, occurred behind the sofa of the living room (cadaver and blood odor/DNA), which proves that indubitably such piece of furniture was pushed back by someone, after the death of Madeleine MCann occurred. Because of the weak (small) vestiges recovered at such place, it is to admit as a strong hypothesis that the same was subjected to a wash, at the time the death occurred.
In the same way, the soft toy used by the dead child, found at the head of the bed where she usually slept (see photos about the initial forensics) reveals that someone put it there in a moment posterior to the death, once the bed doesn’t have cadaver odor. This is, there occurred an intentional modification in order to simulate a “picture” that doesn’t correspond with the reality;
It must be added that the cadaver odor signaled a strong odor in the bedroom where the McCann slept, which can indicate the moving of the corpse from the actual death scene (living room) to the non visible part of the bedroom;
Furthermore a strong reaction for cadaver odor was made on Kate’s clothes, which can indicate that she was in touch with the cadaver;
There was also a strong reaction of cadaver odor in the car used by the McCann (since May 27th 2007), which in conjugation with the blood dog and the forensics present in the “Autos”, that indicate the presence of Madeleine McCann’s DNA in the booth of the car, are in order not to exclude a strong hypothesis that this car may have been used to transport the cadaver, 24 days after the death;
It can’t also be neglected the indication of the cadaver and blood dog, on the car key, having the laboratory confirmed the existence of Gerald McCann’s DNA. This last signaling was obtained by the dogs after the key was put far away from the car and in a place not visible.
From everything that was exposed from the AUTOS, we conclude that:
A) The minor Madeleine McCann died in the apartment 5A of the Ocean Club resort, on the night of May 3rd of 2007;
B) It was performed a simulation of kidnapping;
C) In order to avoid the death [alarm] of the minor before 22H00, it was created a situation of the children’s surveillance by the McCann while the children slept;
D) Kate McCann and Gerald McCann are involved in the occultation of the cadaver of their child Madeleine McCann;
E) At this moment, there seems that there aren’t strong indicia that the death of the minor didn’t happen due to a tragic accident;
F) From what was obtained until now, everything points out that the McCann, as self-defense, didn’t want to deliver immediately and voluntarily the cadaver, existing a strong possibility that the same was transported from the initial place of deposition. This situation is susceptible to raise questions about the circumstances under which the death of the minor occurred.
So we suggest that the “Autos” be sent to the EX.mo Sr. Procurador Geral da Républica [General Attorney], in order to:
G) New interrogation of the Arguidos Kate and Gerry McCann;
H) Evaluation of the measure of restraint to be applied in this case;
On the course of the house search to the residence of the Mccann, a manuscript was found, a sort of diary, already photocopied, possibly authored by Kate McCann, and admitting that the same may contain elements that may help to reach the material truth of the facts, WE PROPOSE THAT:
I) The photocopies of such document to be presented to the M.Mo Judge regarding its apprehension, if legal, translation and eventual recovery of elements to bring into the “Autos” for future investigation.

The same net based opinion/outrage/support that resulted in the girl's actual aquittal on a charge of murdering a local party official, it is after all China that we are talking about.
But it was these few lines that caught my attention more than anything.

I say fiction, because it is of course, Alan Shore - Boston Legal, giving one of his famous closings. Pity he didn't represent the Browns, they sure could have used him.

Kate McCann is preparing to make an emotional trip to Portugal in a new effort to find her missing daughter Madeleine.
She has not been there since September 2007, four months after Madeleine vanished from the family’s holiday apartment in the resort of Praia da Luz.
Kate, husband Gerry and their twins, Sean and Amelie, flew home to Leicestershire after being made arguidos by the Portuguese police.
That status was lifted in July last year as detectives in Portugal effectively shelved the investigation. However, a team of former top British police officers, financed by a family friend, is now investigating the case.
Last week Gerry flew to Portugal to meet the family’s lawyer and to get an update on the work being carried out by the British team. He is said to have found the trip very useful.
Madeleine vanished nine days short of her fourth birthday.

A Christian bus driver has refused to drive a bus with an atheist slogan proclaiming "There's probably no God".Ron Heather, from Southampton, Hampshire, responded with "shock" and "horror" at the message and walked out of his shift on Saturday in protest.

Almost the entire 1911 census goes online for public access on Tuesday. Rob Liddle looks at what we can hope to find out from it and how organisers hope to avoid a repeat of the deluge that shut the 1901 census website last time.
The answers to thousands of questions lurk within the two kilometres of shelving space taken up by the 1911 census documents at the National Archives in London.
Among the eight million returns are family secrets that have lain undiscovered for generations and pages inhabited by the previously unknown relatives of those alive today.
These families - as yet untouched by the horrors of a new kind of war - seem to exist in a different world from ours....more

Another Nail In The Coffin of UK Civil Liberties

Every story I have ever read on building a national data base of the soon to be next generation always cites enabling students to be able to buy their lunch.
I won't say does this government think we're fucking stupid because the answer is patently obvious, as patently obvious as the contempt that it holds for its citizens.
Given the UKs four million plus CCTV cameras, (includes very short clip) one for every fourteen citizens, are expected to double by 2018 one doesn't have to consult the entrails of a goat to predict where all this is heading.
When each of those eight million cameras has a facial features recognition camera alongside it then we will have the totalitarianism that this government is so blatantly trying to achieve. I say alongside but of course technologically speaking the cameras will be integral by then. (If not already.)
And having achieved this goal kiddywinks, you're fucked, you're fucked and you're living in a goldfish bowl.
I don't know why the government doesn't just have done with it and enforceably chip every sprog at birth.
And I will hazard a guess to what comes next; the surreptitious taking of DNA to expand the world's largest DNA database.
Democracy, don't you just love it?

Face Scanners To Be Installed In Schools
The system, which is being trialled in a UK school next week, can also be used to allow children to take out library books and buy their lunch.It is among a host of high-tech security measures introduced in schools in a bid to keep pupils safe.
Some schools have brought in fingerprint and eye scanners, while others are planning to put radio transponder chips in pupils' uniforms to keep tabs on them.
But there are fears the technology breaches children's civil liberties.
One school installed an iris scanner in 2003 but removed it a year later after it failed to recognise some students and led to lengthy queues.
Aurora, a Northampton-based biometric firm, will exhibit its new "face recognition software" at an education technology conference in London next week.
The company has developed a prototype aimed at schools for "ultra fast student registration, easy cashless catering and secure access control".
Each system - costing around £1,000 - can verify a face in 1.5 seconds and claims to be more accurate at identifying people than a human.
Patrick Usher, the company's technical director, told the Times Educational Supplement that adapting the technology for children was a challenge as their faces changed quicker than adults.
John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said the system would be welcomed if it cut bureaucracy - but he said: "You always seem to get queues behind security devices".
Guidance issued in 2007 gives headteachers permission to collect pupils' biometric data to use when taking the register, paying for lunch or using the library.
But civil liberties campaigners are concerned that the data could be given to police or the Government without parents' knowledge - or stolen by identity thieves.
"These systems store fingerprint templates, which are used by the police. It leaves children open to identity fraud later on," said the pressure group Leave Them Kids Alone. Source Telegraph
