For all my liberalism and metrosexuality I have to admit the term "marry" just doesn't sit right with me, I've absolutely no problem with gays being able to commit to a civil union and be afforded all the protections that are bestowed on hetro couples, but the word "marry" when applied to same sex unions just sticks.
Senior Conservative Alan Duncan is to become the first Tory MP to enter into a civil partnership.
The party's business spokesman will make political history when he exchanges vows with his partner James Dunseath in the summer.
The pair, who announced their intended partnership today, met at a dinner party given by a mutual friend 14 months ago.more

ReplyDeleteI understand, and I don't blame you. But you just have to get over it. Full civil rights and equality means all or nothing.
Happily, you have many more pressing issues to irritate you.
Another way of keeping everything equal: allow civil unions to be the only form of domestic partnership recognized by the state, regardless of the genders involved. Domestic partners would then be free to enjoy whatever form of religious (or non-religious) ceremony they like, above and beyond the sole legally binding agreement of the civil union.
ReplyDeleteThe above solution would have the added benefit (to secularists) of removing one of the last bits of legal authority from the hands of the church.
I just can't understand the hangup people have with the word marry when it is applied to same sex relationships. If I ever find a woman who I love I would not get on bended knee and ask her to be my civil partner, I would ask her to be my wife. Regardless of what the state wants to label it, we would be getting married in our hearts. I have yet to be given a satisfactory explanation as to why it should not be called married by anyone who does not like the term married when applied to same sex partners. Kind of like I have yet to be given a satisfactory explanation of god. HH
ReplyDeleteI hear you all.
ReplyDeleteI would not get on bended knee and ask her to be my civil partner,
Yes it would rather take the romance out of the moment.

When you find Utopia will you let me know?

Ah yes!

ReplyDeleteLS [Leeds Student]: So why did you oppose civil partnerships? That’s to do with individuals’ private lives and legal recognition.
NG [Nick Griffin]: Civil partnerships are a way of sliding towards marriage for everyone through the backdoor. It undermines the institution of marriage, and as a result of that, children will die over the next few years, because they’ll be brought up in homes which aren’t married. They’re not all bad of course, but it’s a weaker way of rearing children, that is what the statistics show.
Nick Griffin, according to his wife.

Nick was an oddball, never part of the gang, she says.
After graduating in 1980, Griffin worked full time for the National Front.
I thought he would grow out of it, says Jackie. I was earning money, he wasn't - what a fool I was.
I worked my a*** off trying to keep us going, Jackie moaned.
I've been... working to keep us going financially and bring up four children while he's spent his time playing at stupid politics. To Nick, it's all a game.
It's a funny old world. MM
I think you ideally capture the man's essence in the first quote.
ReplyDeleteWhy is though, that racism and homophobia always seem to go hand in glove?
Which prompted me to Google: Tony Bennett BNP.

There are times when I wonder if I am doing Bennett a disservice, but then a quick Google always seems to allay any such fears.
